In recent years I have used Dremel abrasive buffs to clean strap
before brazing with 15% Silv-Alloy. The buffs come in three grits -
180, 280 and 320. I sometimes have to start with the coarsest if
bonding to an old strap, especially one that has been outdoors. I
always end with the 320, even on new strap. Clean surfaces are a
must. On thin, relatively narrow straps MAPP gas will work, but on
anything with more mass I use oxy-propane (a trick learned from an
auto mechanic decades ago - cheaper than oxy-acetylene and sufficient
for anything short of heavy cutting).
