The last I heard, the grounding is now a bigger than 9/11/01 and
worsening. The latest from the folks in Iceland is the eruptions are
increasing both in intensity and frequency with a threat the bigger
brother volcano violently erupting in the coming days. There is history to
support this scenario.
I spoke with a NWS friend of mine and he advised if this continues for
some time, the northern hemisphere 2010 summer could be cooled by a degree
or two. This, of course, depends on how much more debris material is
injected into the middle and upper atmosphere AND whether the upper wind
patterns remain the same or revert back to more normal conditions which
would push the debris north.
At present, there is a highly amplified mid-latitude "omega block" 500mB
jet sream pattern in place over Greenland. (Which has largely been in
place since last November.) This is what's causng the debris to float over
Europe instead of going north to into the upper level polar westerly jet
stream. Once the upper air pattern changes, the main route of the debris
cloud will go north. Granted, that will impact the air routes which cross
the north pole and high latitude areas. But at least they can go
around/over it.
