Thomas G. Osenkowsky opines: "Car radios are not what they used to be. They are now
an integral part of most dashboards. You can't just take
out a "radio" and replace it with another brand/model.
Many have remote controls on the steering wheel, etc.
It's not just a power/speaker connector and antenna
cable anymore."

Except that that usually IS the case for satellite radios in cars. There's a separate box housing the satrad's receiver with a data cable going to the head unit. Disconnection should be easy, with a little snooping (and some help from the car's shop manual, if you want to cheat).

There's a company called Dice Electronics that used to make an after-market HD add-on for certain vehicles that connected to the satrad input to the factory head unit. They killed that product line, but now make a multimedia adapter (iPod, USB sticks, Sirius radio, etc.) that plugs into the same place.
