They're welcome to blow themselves up, just as long as they don't take anyone else with them :)
I AM harsh on them. I don't give them the benefit of considering them religious nuts. At least you can excuse those kind of people on the grounds of mental illness or stupidity. The Westboro Baptist group is practically ALL a bunch of calculating, plotting lawyers, looking to extract money damages from people and government officials who oppose them, by hiding behind the First Amendment. They attempt to incite violence and opposition, then sue people for committing the very acts they incite.
The First Amendment was NEVER intended to give cover to these kinds of people.
You want to read something that'll make your blood boil? Look up Albert Snyder on the web. The Westboro Baptist Church group protested at the funeral of his son, a Marine corporal who served honorably and was killed in the line of duty. Snyder sued the church for invasion of privacy and emotional distress, and was awarded $5 million by a jury. But the 4th US Circuit Court of Appeals overturned that judgment last year on First Amendment grounds, and, to add insult to injury, ordered Snyder to pay Westboro's legal fees of over $16,000. The U.S. Supreme Court has agreed to hear the case, but what the outcome will be there is unkown.
