We had a couple of these at KWXY, but have not experienced the symptom that you indicate.  Usually mechanical problems (i.e. loading tray) or broken buttons because some of the announcers were not too kind to the equipment.  I never see schematics or service info on consumer-grade equipment.  And considering the cost of the item, vs. your labor cost in trying to fix it, it may well be more cost-effective to just replace it.  It sounds like it could be a microprocessor problem, anyway, making repair pretty much impossible.
