I started pulling a board shift on a top 40 AM in March, 1965. I guess I
was lucky? We had a rack with five Collins/ATC cart machines. The cart
decks were populated with vacuum tubes, Bodine motors, belt driven capstan
flywheels and the top of the rack got pretty warm. If you were lucky, three
of the decks worked OK. That's when and why I started working on equipment.
When we replaced them with three Gates/Harris Intertype Criterions (also
rack-mounted, but solid state), I thought we had died and gone to heaven.
We did have a Magnecord PT-6 in the production room. That thing had the
fastest rewind that I have ever seen. One day, the 7" plastic takeup reel
disintegrated during rewind and there were shards of plastic stuck in the
acoustical tile wall & ceiling.

" The first station I did a jock position, we had mostly 5" reels on the
350's but there were some 3" ones as well. Try doing a break with 4-5 spots
and two 350's and small reels with several cuts on each... It was a lot of
fun. Most of the spots were 60's. I did this was in the mid 1960's.
