 As a contracted project engineer......

Generally, a daily or every other day verbal briefing.
 Sometimes more often.
Very brief written summary with the invoice.
If/when the check arrives, I know they got it.
Pretty much NOBODY doesn't read an invoice, so I can
 usually assume it's been read.

Rough, brief, explaining any details in depth as requested.

> 4. what is the best story about their response?

Really, nothing more than a request for more detail
 on some point or another.
Sometimes a request for an opinion on their CE.

Whoever hired me. Usually a senior level VP, sometimes
higher in the chain, sometimes a regional VP, always
the local CE as a CC on technical brief, but the invoice
goes to whoever originally hired me, unless otherwise
 directed.
