[BC] My story...

I had a similar situation. I spent most of the 1980s working as a contractor.
Part of this involved doing cover for FT engineers when they went on vacation.
One day I got called from an owner who asked me to come in. When I got there I
was told that he wanted me to come in twice a month to keep his AM/FM 'running
well'. I asked him where his (very good) FT engineer was and he told me he had
canned him because: "I don't need an engineer-everything's working great".
I declined his offer-but I know that someone else did take it. In Boston there
were/are WAY too many contractors-not to mention that practically every FT
engineer has a station or two they 'take care of'. It's the main reason that
rates haven't really gone up there in over 10 years.

I once worked for a company as C.E. for their Los Angeles AM & FM
combo (not KFAC). They were great to work for - then they
sold. During the time I was with the stations they had few if any
technical problems. Most problems were quietly handled before they
turned into a catastrophe and went un-noticed to management and air
staff. After about five years under the new owners, including moving
the studios 3 times in four years, management noticed that I was
apparently being paid to do nothing.
