[BC] Signal/Transmitter question... spur/harmonic or other issue?

Regarding this intermod thing, I remember a
tale from years gone by.
I was at Moseley Associates and we had just put
into production an FM exciter for RCA. This is
the one with the black front panels; I think the year
was something like 1970 or so. Exact year is
of no importance.
One of the first exciters out in the field resulted in a
frantic phone call to RCA / Meadowlands. "There
are spurs all over the dial! Something is VERY
wrong here!"
Moseley flew their engineering manager Howard
Ham to the site, and RCA did the same thing,
but sent two people as I recall. Lots of dollars in
expenses.
Everyone met at the designated hotel and then
went to the transmitter site.
The "engineer" then turned on his Sarkus-Tarzian
(spelling?) radio and sure enough the radio picked
up signals all over the dial.
The words "urge to strangle" probably came to
mind. Yes, something was indeed very wrong
there!
