back up to a USB drive, or another hard disk. That's it."

I use Vista Business, and I absolutely refuse to use any OS version with a "home" or "basic" label, which are usually Microsoft shorthand for "crippled in some manner."  I didn't have to change a thing.  It just worked.  You have to go through a short setup wizard first, but once that's done, no worries.
