*** WARNING WARNING ***
Windows Vista will not allow backups to a network drive! It also will not allow backups to a tape drive! Any attempt to use the "backup/restore center" results in the network drive dot" being grayed-out so you cannot use it. I just spent the weekend researching the problem on the Internet and find that there IS NO SOLUTION! True, one could use 'xcopy' from the 'cmd' prompt, but the customer refuses.

Microsoft does not consider it a bug. They will not fix it. They expect you to backup to a physical drive or to a partition on the existing one.

This Micro$turd error just cost me about $500 because I built up a Linux/Samba file-server for a client who needs to backup files over the network. It turns out the client has Vista Home Basic (what comes with the Dell machines) on all his machines. It cannot be changed without incurring the cost of complete new (expensive) development software on all 15 machines. This means that my project FAILED and I have to eat the cost of the server.

If you are using Windows Vista on your machines, you will surely get a surprise when you try to backup the file-system.

Cheers,

Richard:

I realize cash is likely tight for you right now, but when things ease
up, look for a Dell Mini 9. New, on the Dell web site they were
$249!
