Years ago I was working at a tv station just south of Garden City, Kansas.
There had been a bad ice storm the night before. The tower was absolutely
covered with ice, the sun was out and things were melting nicely. They had
just started the news program, potting up the mics, running intro music,
etc. A big chunk of ice fell off the tower and crashed into the top of the
utility pad mounted AC service transformer. What a sound that made when the
transformer exploded! What a wonderful blue flash!. The news guy jumped up
and tried to leap over the set. He fell flat on his nose....

There is a standing rule there which states "No one is to enter the rear
yard area without a hardhat during periods when ice and/or snow might
accumulate on the tall tower. If there is doubt about the conditions, what
ever needs to be done can wait."
Many years ago, we had an ice buildup event, and the news crew on one of
the local TV channels was commenting on all the ice on the (700') tower out
their back door. I think there was some discussion on whether they should be
there, etc. Soon a chunk of ice came through the ceiling onto the set. Yup,
time to go.
