 I too, at home, ran into a "distance" problem when I first looked into ADSL.
 I'm something like 1400 feet from the CO.
 "Nope. Too far away" they said.
 Got it from a reseller. During initial testing, the line checked out 9 megabit
 both ways reliable.
 Try as I might to sweet talk the tester into "accidentally" leaving it there,
 that didn't happen. It appears actual baud is artificially restricted at the CO.
 I'm sure there's some merit in the "distance" argument, but I'm not sure
 one can get past the bureaucrats sometimes.
 At 14000 feet I would have believed them, but not at 1400.
