I have not been so fortunate.  At one station, when I first visited the
transmitter I found that the 833s had holes burned in the plates.  No wonder
they sounded so bad!  Spares?  What's that?

I agree that it was possible to do all the measurements in an hour.  It took
a lot longer than that to write up the results and draw the graphs.

Sone places had a policy of checking the console tubes with a tube tester
and replacing the weak ones.  Other stations just said not to spend the time
(or maybe they didn't have a tube tester) and just "shotgun" the board with
all new tubes every year, whether they were bad or not.  ISTR that the
Gatesway had 36 tubes.
