Several years ago, I copied WA2XMN (250 watts ERP on 42.8 MHz
transmitting from the Armstrong Tower in Alpine, NJ) on an Icom mobile
transceiver atop Mt Asnebumskit near Worcester, Mass. The receiver
was probably desensitized due to overload from WAAF and other nearby
stations, so the signal was noisy, but still intelligible.
On an old CEI Nuvistor receiver, I received WA2XMN with nearly full
quieting west of Philadelphia using a dipole about 20 feet above
ground.
Many of the Pennsylvania state agencies (like the Game Commission)
moved from low-band to a 800 MHz digital system a few years ago. This
was a big mistake in the mountainous regions.
