Two monster talents in radio have died the past few days.
Larry Glick was an overnight sensation in Boston on WMEX, WBZ and WHDH. Many
from all over the country listened to him on WBZ-he was funny, entertaining
and a gentleman. I worked with Larry at WHDH in the early '90s, and he was a
gentleman both on and off the air.
Here is a personal story I'd like to share...
I was the Chief Engineer at WHDH 850 from 1989 through 1994. In the spring of
1991, my(ex) wife was due any time with our third child, and the arrangement
that I had with WHDH was that when she once into labor, I would call the
station and my two weeks vacation would begin. She went into labor quickly and
just after midnight on May 10, 1991, my son Ian was born, at home on the
living room floor with two midwives and an acupuncturist present. I called the
station on the hotline and told the producer Theresa the good news. She put me
on hold and the next thing I heard the familiar hiss of the Telos hybrid.
Larry had put me on the air; he wanted to congratulate me personally. In the
background my minutes old son was crying in the background. It was GREAT radio
and Larry's genuine happiness and delight to the good news came clearly though
the telephone line. When he discovered that Ian had been born at home with
midwives and he got really interested in that! I put one of the midwives on
the phone and Larry spoke with her for several minutes on air-then invited
both of them on his show the next week. They did go on with Larry and it was a
great show. From that day on, whenever I see, talk to or write of my son, I
think of Larry.
The other loss was that of Jim West. If you ever heard a TM jingle during
their glory days back in the 1970s, Jim likely produced it. Later, he hooked
up with Al Ham and the two of them developed and syndicated The Music of Your
Life-a format that saved many an AM station in the 1980s. Jim was also a great
guy...
