As a further follow-up, g4l is distributed as an ISO image, so you can
burn a CD of it, then boot a machine off the CD. It will make an image of
the hard drive, no matter what's on the hard drive (such as another OS). A
variety of compression methods are available for the image. There's also a
linux utility that writes zeroes out to all unused sectors on the hard
drive. These zero sectors then compress to be really small.

I use g4l to back up my linux servers and laptop and my wife's Mac laptop.
