Bob Collins, rest his soul, was a mentor to me during my on air
career. In fact, he helped me get my first job, a weekend gig at WRIT
while I was a junior in high school. I met Bob while he was doing a
remote for a car dealer out in my hometown of Brookfield. I told him
what I wanted to do, and that I had a 3rd class ticket. Even though he
worked for a competitor, WOKY, Bob called Tex Meyer at WRIT and got me
in the door. We kept in touch over the years having lunch whenever I
would be in Chicago. Upon his elevation to the morning show at WGN, I
called to congratulate him, and true to his nature, Bob said, "so much
about me, how are you getting along, pardner?". Bob's best advice, was
to be myself, to take what I did seriously but never to take myself
too seriously.....and to remember it's the listener who's king. I was
blessed to have known him, and to share his birthday.
