As I have stated, I am totally blind so, getting in to radio was a challenge. I new a fellow who worked at the little 1000 watt day timer licensed to Texas city just south of Houston and he let me by two hours on Saturday afternoon. As a salesman I failed and so, got so in debt the station hired me to work off my debt. I stayed at that station 7 years and learned much their. In the early eighties I was program director at an f m here in Lufkin where I live and we didn't have an engineer. I new more then anyone ells their so I was chief for about two years. I am by know means qualified but these folks didn't know that and I wanted the experience so away we went.
I remember the air switch went out in the tube cavity on the Harris 20 kilowatt transmitter we were running and, so I called Harris. I told the fellow I had the breaker off and the back door off the transmitter. First thing He told me was to take the stick hanging in the transmitter and bleed off the voltage from the capacitors. I've always wondered what He would have said if I had told Him I was totally blind. Probably would have thought it was a joke.
