While working at one station that was a strict daytimer (at least per
the terms of it's license anyways), we signed off on time one night
right about sunset in January or so (I don't recall the exact month,
but it was winter).
The studio phone was ringing about 9:30pm and seeing that it was a
local number, I answered it. The caller wanted to..REQUEST A SONG! I
proceeded to tell her we were off the air but asked her what song she
wanted, and after a minute of figuring out what genre it was I said,
"Maam, if you'll call back Monday through Friday, 7am to 10am or
Sundays 7am to 12noon they will be glad to play your gospel song".
She said thank you and hung up.
Guess who called back two days later and asked the SAME question?
Yup. And I know for a fact she didn't call during the day when the
gospel show was on the previous 2 days!
I also had one lady call at 12midnight, asking me to help her find
the title and artist of a song. When I finally got her to tell me
what genre it was, I asked, "Where did you hear this?" ..as I spent a
good 5 minutes searching the lyrics on line. She said, "Oh, it's on
93.7 FM Right NOW!"... 93.7 was over 50 miles away and in NO WAY related to us.
I had another lady call some time later and asked for "The number to
that 102.1 FM radio station in Sardis". I told her I didn't have it
on hand, but if she'd hold on a minute I'd grab the phone book and
look. I couldn't find it there, so I told her I'd have to look on the
computer and I found it and said "Maam, here's the number...." and I
also read off the address as being in SENATOBIA. She then proceeded
to say "But I thought it was in Sardis. And aren't all you radio
stations interconnected?"
I had to explain to her briefly about city of license vs. studio
location rules.. and then explained to her NO, not all radio stations
are interconnected.
I once had a listener call my sattion in Williston, North Dakota
looking for the phone number to a Minot, North Dakota radio station..
which was 120 miles from where I Was!
I've had other phone calls from lsiteners that would relaly make you
scratch your head, but thsoe above take the cake. and before anyone
snaps at me....i realize not everyone knows about radio.. but there
should be some common sense applied.. like... Don't call a radio
station that's off the air and request a song?
