I don't share your fervent love for Las Vegas, but I do agree with
you. Most on this list know that I travel extensively with the Taste
of NAB Road Show. I have never seen hotel rooms anywhere across the
US as reasonable as I have found in Las Vegas. As for food, most of
the hotels larger have some rather nice restaurants: some bordering
on the gourmet side of things. I didn't put on this belly of mind
with cheep crap food. I do live good quality food and it abounds in
Las Vegas, if you take the time to look for it. (I like sushi too,
but watch, we'll get a dozen responses about uncooked fish).
Being born and raised in Southern California, I have kind of grown up
with, and seen, the many changing faces of Las Vegas over the years.
I do remember when there was no strip. All I can say is that NAB and
CES have found a home that seems to work for the majority of those
who should or need to go to those kinds of conventions/shows. In all
the discussions I've seen about moving NAB to other venues on this
and other lists, I've yet to see anyone come up with a place that can
accommodate the way Las Vegas can and for the price it does it for.
Some of the vendors have a beef with the unions at the convention
center. Guess that's the price you have to pay for dealing in the real world.
When I lived and worked in Hollywood, my wife and I would often drive
up to "Vegas" for the weekend. I have also gone to conventions at any
number of other cities across the country. I've yet to see a place
that could handle the large crowds as well as Las Vegas. Las Vegas is
one of a kind. It has something for everyone, but you have to leave
your preconceptions behind you when you go there and have an open
mind. What others do in Las Vegas is their business! No one died and
left anyone in charge to make judgments of what others do. We have
too much of others trying to run other peoples lives. That can't
happen in Las Vegas because if it did, you'd probably and rightfully
so, get shown I-15 out of town.
