I used to do this!
When I was the CE at WAVA in Washington, when it was the flame
thrower Top-40 station, I would do this!
We would have to go totally off the air for some reason -- antenna
switch work, some big lift -- something RARE, because we were
generally NEVER off the air, I would get a bunch of prizes, and we
would offer them to the first 10, 20, 25, or 30 callers when we came
back on the air. It only happened a few times because we had two of
everything when I got there, and had three antennas when I left.
We would have at least one person answering the phones during the off-
air time to explain what was going on and what we would be giving
away when we came back on, and to help take the information when we
did come back up.
I think we had higher cume being off the air than most stations had
being on.
I always coordinated the return to the air with the jock. When the
carrier came back on, the jingle, and legal ID would IMMEDIATELY
follow, and 19 phone lines would light up in less than three
seconds. I don't know how they would do it.
