As are coke piles at power plants.  Coal is naturally lightly radioactive. 
But since the radioactive in the coal material doesn't burn, it remains in 
the ash at substantially higher concentration levels.  It wasn't until the 
mid-60's that scientists figured out why so many coal handlers were dying 
early of cancer at power plants.

Now a days, the NRC and OSHA limits the amount of time workers can be 
exposed and they all must wear personal radiation monitors.
