Given the state of the art and advances in technology,
I believe Jeff is onto something. Here is my vision, it's
a step beyond. Cyber broadcasting. 100% Internet.
Each person is given a $40 coupon by the U.S. Gov't
to be applied toward the purchase of a Cyber Broadcast. It
will have the appearance of an AM/FM radio. All shapes,
sizes, colors, etc. The package will also include a Cyber
Modulator which will connect to your computer. It will
be GPS equipped.
We will no longer need AM or FM transmitters, towers or
antennas. All transmission will be over the Internet. Depending
on your location, the GPS will dictate reception on your
Cyber radio. There will be fading, signal strength, multipath....
all to make it as realistic as OTA broadcasting. Broadcast
stations will 'staff' their facilities with real people who will play
music, do talk shows, etc. from the Main Studio as shown on
their FCC license. The consoles, CD players or workstations will
all by Cyber. On computer screens. EAS Rules will remain in effect.
Coverage, directional antennas, operating hours will all remain the
same as they are now as will FCC fees.
Think about it. No more SX-1 vs BC-1 debates here. It will all
be virtual! The virtual tx blowing MOSFETS or shorted tubes.
The virtual coffee spill in the board. Virtual sunfades. The virtual
zoning/NIMBY meetings, tower fence violations. All on computer.
The virtual NAB Convention. Virtual audio processors, antennas, etc.
Manufacturers will now provide their wares in virtual mode. It will
save energy and resources. No more factories, bulky hardware, etc.
As the technology to merge the human mind with hardware advances
we will no longer need keyboards, mice, etc. See what one imaginary
post can do! Thanks, Jeff!

It was just my imagination, runnin' away with me....
