That is more than a little whacky.
To sell a transmitter means you are going to take quite a hit, likely
60%.
BUT, that OLDER transmitter is going to be inexpensive too, except
that it is going to be REALLY expensive to get going on frequency.
This is just a bad economic plan. It just will never work out.
Add to that the fact that small transmitters have gotten to be VERY
INEXPENSIVE compared to just a decade or two ago.
There is absolutely no reason to not buy new from a cost standpoint.
One more thing, a SUX1- or SUX-5 really didn't like nearby lightning
strikes in some instillations. They would fold back in power, then
slowly bring it on.
A new Nautel comes with all kinds of neat rings and stuff to keep it
purring along at full power when things are less than happy outside.
I have to say, if I were given a choice between a SX-1 and a Bauer
tube transmitter, even if built from a kit, I would take the Bauer.
They are MUCH easier to change the frequency, from one end of the
band to the other, or even to the 160, 80, or even (with a lot more
work) 40 Meter ham bands. The Harris SX won't do that.
Still, unless it is free, and I have all the time in the world to
make the mods, even the Bauer is gong to be expensive. Even once on
frequency, it is gong to need to be fed tubes, and the labor charges
to change them.
Get a new Nautel, or even BE or Harris solid state rig, and get on
with life.
Selling a fairly new solid state rig for the cash, and replace it
with an older solid state rig is just STUPID. Just give me $5000 and
don't do it. You will come out better with giving me $5k, and doing
nothing that doing that plan!
