I appreciate all of the comments in response to my thoughts on the SX
series.
I knew that the transistor was an IRF350, but was under the impression that
it was a hybrid version and that a stock IRF350 would not be suitable. Maybe
I was misinformed.
My observation regarding the annual transistor "pop" was reinforced for me
at the time by
friends and aquaintences having similar experiences.
I'm less cynical now than I was this morning.
Thanks.

Chuck,
Basically you are correct. Harris has always recommended pair replacement,
but working with 5's I have found this results in pulling a lot of good
transistors in boxes with low dissipation. The theory is that if you
blow one transistor all four in the quad should be changed as a precaution.
If the other problems - matching, overmodulation etc. - are solved when
the dissipation is nicely in the safe range AND installation is correct,
the failure rate goes down.
