 I'm not so sure SuSE is necessarily "preferred" but it was the default
 used by the sponsor in the early years.
 It's more just a legacy hold-over at this stage.
 There are packages for Ubuntu if you're more comfortable
 on that OS.
 Of course, you can compile from source for any Linux based OS,
 and a few others as well.
 The biggest majority of my work with Rivendell is done on Slackware.
 ( a BSD derived OS, as opposed to the System-V derived SuSE )
 I found SuSE a tad too McWindows for my tastes.
