That reminds me of a story told by an engineer who worked
for Varian in Salt Lake City. He was in the process of
characterizing the heat capacity of a new model X-Ray tube,
not the tube itself, but its container which looks like an
all too typical neutron bomb shown in TV plays. It even had
a radiation sticker, which made it look all the more deadly.
He brought it home to carefully install a bunch of surface-
mount thermocouples, which were placed all over the surface
with Kapton tape.

When returning to work, just after 9/11, he had this monster
"bomb" in the back of his station-wagon as he stopped at a
super market to pick up some cigarettes. When he came out of
the store, police were evacuating the parking lot so he couldn't
get to his station-wagon. He didn't know what was happening,
and since he was running late, he called his wife who picked
him up and brought him to work.

At midday, the police arrived at his place of work carrying
machine guns. They grabbed him and hauled him away after "subduing"
him by clubbing him over the head after they manacled him. He spent
some time in the hospital and his vehicle was destroyed because
they took in out into the desert and blew it up.

He was never able to recover any damages after spending most of
his savings on lawyers. Varian also laid him off, claiming that
if he had followed company procedures this wouldn't have happened
because they wouldn't have allowed him to bring the X-Ray tube home.
The lawyers always have the last word. Last I knew the engineer
was working in Florida as a real estate salesman.

Cheers,
