TEN  bells were actually rung on a Saturday night in October
1962 by WHCA when they transmitted a Presidential Directive
warning to all ConelraD authorized stations to prepare for 
NO DRILL activation of the system any time after 10 AM EDT
the next morning.

The world did not end. The system was not activated. We did
not go to war. And the Russian ships did not continue to
Cuba.

However, the station which had only a crystal for 1240 was
tested and reset to 1550 by 3:00 AM with instructions for
the sign-on engineer to call me if activation was received
the next morning. That was 46 years ago but hearing 10 bells
and reading the message is an unforgettable memory, even
today, or ever.
