[BC] A question for Rich Wood

This reminded me of something that used to really annoy me. Back in the
days, before we had so much automation, it wasn't uncommon for
DJs/announcers to blame engineering, on-air, for their own screw-ups. The
most common example would be the operator's failure to record Paul Harvey
from the network, an hour before it was scheduled for airing. The usual
excuse given was "Due to *technical difficulties*, today's Paul Harvey News
and Comment will not be heard." They would, then, play yesterday's
broadcast or skip it altogether. I never heard anyone tell the truth, which
would be something like "Due to my forgetting to record today's Paul Harvey
News and Comment, it will not be heard." I often wondered how many
listeners got the impression that the station's engineering department was
incompetent.

Even if the network recorder was automatically started with a timer,
operators would forget to thread up a reel of tape or press the record set
and then blame it on *technical difficulties.* With PCs doing the delays,
it's hardly ever a problem anymore. Thank you for letting me vent my
spleen.
