I don't really understand why it's disrespectful not to change your
format. WQXR, New York, stuck with its format during 9/11 on the
theory that people might want an escape from the constant repetition.
The music was a bit more somber but they didn't do the constant
repetition everyone else did. Trust me. Once you've seen or heard
about the event it gets tiresome and profoundly depressing. I saw it
all from the street about a half a mile away. I have a recurring
movie in my head. I don't need to see that clip of the smoking tower.
It's part of my brain. Many who witnessed the event close up are
suffering from PTSD. It was the most horrible sight I'll ever see as
long as I live.
People grieve in different ways. Suggesting that religious or somber
Classical music is the only option makes no sense. It doesn't speak
to the majority of the population. I think it may be appropriate to
suspend some inappropriate cuts from your format but we should
program music that speaks to various groups of people and surround it
with sensitively presented information. You might want to change the
focus of your almost obscene morning show for sure. In many cases,
that's devoid of respect under any circumstance.
