[BC] RCA phono plugs - How far back?

I would venture to say that it may just need some alignment. My dad had a
1936 Zenith that was pretty deaf -- I had to put my ear up to the speaker to
hear anything. Later, when I aligned it, it could pull in just about
anything. Venezuela on 750 kc/s, for instance. I also had (before it was
stolen) a 1955 Zenith Trans-Oceanic that had much the same problem. With
yours, however, you should try an antenna, even if it is 30 feet of hookup
wire draped over a curtain rod.
