Jeff:
At one of the first Radio Stations I worked we used two Channel Motorola FM
two-way radios on 26.25 mHz and 26.45 mHz. We used two frequencies so when
the skip was in we could maybe find one channel clear. The radios were
modified to use broadcast microphones and the radios were keyed on with a toggle
switch on the control head. The "IDC" audio circuits were mpdified in the three
car units. The base station receiver was modified to get the audio directly
from the discriminator stage and the audio was fed into a line amp with a low
frequency boost and a high frequency peak providing a fairly flat audio between
100 and 4500 cps. at about 3% THD. Noise was -45 dB.
These rules were then FCC Part 74 and allowed the use of AM or FM modes. In
the early days of crystal controlled CB radios many units were licensed on the
RPU frequencies to allow small stations to put radios in most of the staff
members cars for news, remotes and dispatching.
Don't recall the remote control rules. Seems like George Marti played with
both the Part 74, 26 mHz. broadcast channels for transmitter metering and he
may have looked into the 27.255 mHz. frequencies for transmitter remote
controls.
