When I used to rip-and-read local news on
Sunday Morning at WERI because nobody
else wanted to get up that early on Sunday,
I encountered the name “Miglionico Tortericci.”
Therefore, during a commercial break, I ran
down the street to the diner where I had just
eaten breakfast.

I asked the Italian owner and short-order cook
how to pronounce the name. He gave me the
name in a severe Italian accent and I ran back
to the station to report the news.

When Nat Urso, the owner, came to work Monday,
he wanted me to report to him right away in his
Lawyer Office. I wondered what bad thing about
which I going to be blamed.

Instead, he announced that Mr. Tortericci was
so impressed that somebody took the time to
correctly pronounce his name that he wanted to
give me a gift certificate at an expensive store he
owned, plus a free meal for two at an expensive
upscale restaurant that he also owned.

You can’t tell who may be listening.
If y’all gonna doit, y’all otta doit good.
