Hello:

I've searched the Internet for some time, looking for a good, comprehensive
list of network port list, and common usage for those ports. I've found nothing
but bits and pieces, and nothing comprehensive in one place.

Commview shows significant usage of port 3907, yet Activeports shows nothing
attached to that port. There have been over 2 mb of data sent over 3907 to one
of my laptops in the last couple of minutes; not a lot, but what is it?
Occasionally, Commview will also show dozens of ports in numerical succession in
the 3000 range. My guess is that there is a port scanner running somewhere but
the source-destination IP shown in Commview for the Portscan does not show
anything using that port range in Activeports on the two machines in question.

One of the two laptops (CPi-A300) involved has Outlook on it, and the
complaint is that it takes the computer forever to respond to mouse clicks. So that
little devil is busy doing something. That computer runs like a rocket when
disconnected from the network. Whatever the activity is, Port Monitor is not
showing it. Spybot S&D does not show anything on either laptop, and the S&D
database is up to date.

It's probably a virus, but what virus, who knows? The two Dell laptop
computers involved in this conspiracy are a CPI-A300 and a 2650. The CPi-A300 is the
one using port 3907 and also occasionally shows what appears to be port
scanning activity. So that comprehensive port usage list will help in nailing this
problem.
