Is the drive dead on the original?  Master slave config on the drives 
or try ide 1 and 2 on the new machine calling them both the master. 
See if you can steal the data off the original, if its not dead.  If 
you can't get that working, get a ide drive enclosure with a usb 
interface and try stealing the data that way.  Just a few ways to see 
if the original drive works.  I am assuming they are ide.  Check the 
drive on. Known good.

Drive enclosures with usb are good to have around anyhow.  Never know 
when you need to steal data.
