I'm doing this with a pair of 56k's, to get 112 kb/s to remote transmitters.

At each end, you can use an AdTran CSU56/64 to convert the 56k into
a V.35 data socket:

Then, at each end, a codec that can deal with that, such as a
MusicamUSA Prima (for stereo) or Roadrunner (for mono)
with a v.35 data interface installed. Special cables are also
needed from MusicamUSA.

I've also done this with a Telos Zephyr once, and it also
worked well. Special cables are also needed from Telos.

The RJ45 has data on pins 1&2 and pins 7&8, one pair is
transmit, the other receive. It takes two pairs to work, and
a bad connection at any point in any of the 4 wires will cause
it to fail. 56K circuits can only go about 3 miles from the CO
without a mid-span repeater, which adds to the failure-prone
nature of the circuit.

There is a more recent implementation called "Total
Reach" that gets the 56k circuit to your site on a single
pair, using DSL technology. It can go about 6 miles
from the CO without a repeater. Total Reach gear costs
about $2k, and Verizon would not put it in at their expense,
requiring my client to pony up the cash for the gear.

Of course, when the circuit was no longer needed,
they kept the gear. What a racket.

I need some help on a project. The owner of the station I work for ordered a
56k digital line (no dial tone) from the studio to the transmitter site. I
am told this is the best line the phone company can provide as the
transmitter site is in the middle of nowhere. What equipment do I need to
get audio to the transmitter? There appears to be a RJ-45 plug on the
"Transmitter" box at the studio and on the "Receiver" box at the
transmitter. Thanks.
