Minimal. The gateway only need be fast enough to outrun the DSL.
Any 386 is more than enough.
Mail server can be any 386 or so. Also plenty fast enough.

OK. There is that.

That helps, but isn't totally necessary.

Maybe.
I had to fight with mine a little.
I want NO spam filtering, NO virus filtering, NO web page creators,
NO ISP provided "portal," NO newsgroups, NO tech support, NO fluff.
I want ONLY a path to internet. Nothing ( and I do mean NOTHING ) more.
Kinda like convincing your cell company you don't want text messaging.
