If these are the rectangular black diode modules
with an aluminum mounting plate and two screws
on the ends for mounting, they short to ground,
not cathode to anode. This was the usual failure
mode in the Vanguard II. In this case, these were
the plate rectifiers. There was a factory mod to
use eight modules instead of four but this did not
solve the short to ground issue.
