I spent 8 years in San Diego. One of the first things one learns is
not to mount anything over your head. There's nothing like being in a
small hotel without air conditioning, just a ceiling fan. I was at
the Catalina Jazz festival. It was a hot night and the fan was on
high speed. I was thrown out of bed (I was alone, so nature did it)
and saw the fan as potential Cuisinart.
Friends in Palm Springs had a small bedroom. They thought a nice big
mirror at the head of the bed (not on the ceiling) would make the
room look larger. An earthquake centered in Calexico woke them up
just before the mirror fell onto the bed. People get killed in even
minor earthquakes by things like unsecured bookcases and TV sets that
aren't battened down.
I can't say I'd want to be in a TV studio with hundreds of pounds of
metal and glass secured with C-clamps dangling over my head.
Now that I'm back East I was comforted to hear an earthquake expert
say Midwestern and Eastern earthquakes are more dangerous because of
the harder bedrock transmitting energy much more efficiently than the
softer Western bedrock.
Comforting to know.
