Hhehe... ! I try to not use my mouth, either! I do mostly the same thing,
tin the wire first...
usually leave the cup open... using little helping hand tool (with new
clips, I've got a big set and a small set) Ill set the wire in the cup, heat
the cup only, add one TEENYTINY bit of solder to get heat from the cup to
the wire... as soon as the solder flows and it's one joint (you can tell by
looking when that happens)... pull the heat off. alot like soldering
plumbing. If there's a glob on the bottom, I didn't do it right. (IF I tin
the cup, I make sure to only tin it, shaking the excess solder out before I
apply the wire...)

"I *never* put
solder in my mouth! Ugh! What I usually do is position the solder at the
edge
of the bench, protruding beyond it a few inches, bent into a position where
I
can easily bring the work up to meet it. Works every time. :)
