When I worked for a Motorola MSS back in the '60's in Missouri we
would put Dow Corning DC 4 silicon grease on the mating surfaces of
the PL 259 and SO 239 to keep any moisture out and wrap them with
Scotch 33 black plastic tape and never had a failure. To this day I
still put the grease in any outside connectors no matter what type
they are and its never caused a problem. It doesn't take a lot, just
enough to displace any moisture that would otherwise get in.
