 It's been my observation that the switching supply in small UPSs
don't even switch on until a power-failure actually occurs.  In any
case, there is no reason the UPS needs to be physically close to the
equipment its powering- I have cases where equipment is 30 ft away
with no problem.  But these days switching power supplies are in
almost everything so you are surrounded by them.  All these spiky
loads really trash up power line symmetry.
