That's also a trick to try with a FAX machine. Some FAX machines are sensitive
to RF and connect at a slower speed if they sense any. The DSL filter allows
them to run at their max speed.

I put a DSL filter on a telephone line that does not have DSL active on
it, and it improved my modem speed.  Without the filter, I get around 35
kbps, and with it, I get around 45 kbps.  That's still not perfect -- I've
seen speeds up to 51 kbps at a different location -- but it's a big
improvement.
