You are correct in stating that the noise goes into the power 
line.  A quick fix is to acquire a ferrite square form (formerly 
available at Radio Shack) and wind several turns of the power cord 
onto it as close to the UPS as you can get it.  This will attenuate 
the pulses coming out on the power cord 
substantially.  Alternatively, you might use a ferrite rod 1" or so 
in diameter.  Wind the power cord on it tightly and tape in place.
