If you do a little more research you'll find radio and TV are still,
by a wide margin, the population's choice for entertainment. I think
we're getting suckered in by the doomsayers and those who believe
digital is our salvation. At this point, consumers have absolutely no
interest in digital radio. They have great interest in digital TV
because of HDTV. It's sexy.
Personally, I'm getting very tired of references to the "next
generation." It's as though the current generations have no value and
Generation Q, or whatever they call it, is the salvation of media. I
believe it was Bridge Ratings that discovered the use of MP3 players
was declining because of the extra work required to use them. With
radio you turn it on and it does all the work for you, assuming the
content is compelling.
I tend to agree with part of what the biggest doomsayer of all, Jerry
del Colliano, has to say, that consolidation and the lack of good
record company product is likely to kill us off. We may have to do
what Easy Listening stations did and record our own material.
Radio is far from dead. If it dies we will have killed it with lousy
content. IBUZ and DRM are irrelevant without the content.
We still have decades left before Wall Street and record company fees
suck us dry.
