A friend told me the story once of the first variable wing jet
fighter's design. Seems the designers set up a lever to change the angle of
the wing. They pushed it forward to swing forward, and back to swing back.
Then the test pilots got in. As any pilot knows, you push the throttle ball
forward to go faster back to go slower. But forward wings were for slower
flight and back swept wings were for faster flight. I don't remember who
won or how that was resolved.
