Have two Inovonics composite receivers on translators, one older
model, one new.
Very satisfied with them. Have a Dayton composite receiver (two of
them, in fact)--not happy with this unit. Cheap, but you don't get
what you pay for. Junky one-chip receiver, no adjustment for composite
output level, receiver overloaded at one translator site. Ended up
using one as an air monitor receiver, and sent the Inovonics out for
that translator. Got the other to work on another translator, but
with everything wide open just enough level to drive an MS-15 exciter.

In the past, used a Pioneer hi-fi receiver for a translator by pulling
off the composite signal at the detector, and using an IC amp to get
enough gain to drive an exciter. Worked, not all that well because of
intermod at the site on receive, but it did work. However, we had a
schematic for the receiver, and this late 70's Hi-Fi receiver had
discrete components in the IF chain, not a single chip design
impervious to tweaking.

I would recommend sticking with the Inovonics, or possibly the Fanfare.
