We've taken a slightly different approach. Company pays for the laptop up
front, and it's company property for 2 years. 1/2 the value is deducted
from paycheck over the course of a year. After the 2 years, it's the users
computer (we also insist on the 3 year warranty, BTW). We support the
computer if we purchased it, short of negligent damage, for the 2 years,
after that, we assist the user thru warranty channels. They also may find a
computer on their own, and their reimbursed 1/2 the cost, but we
(engineering/ IT) don't call and wait on hold for tech support via the big
box type stores (our normal supplier isn't big name, but they treat us very
well, and aren't afraid to just send a drive or board to have us swap.
Toshiba always seems to want the whole machine, and they usually wipe the
drive, even if it's not a software problem).
The theory is, if the computer will become the users, they're likely to
treat it better.
As far as departures, sales management give them the option to pay full
price or pro-rated somehow before 2 years, or we take it back, and they get
no money back.
