Yes, because the same "marketplace wars" that "killed" AM Stereo also made
it stronger.  In the five years after FCC approval in 1982, there were
significant improvements made to all four of the AM Stereo systems.  But
now, what significant improvements have been made to HD Radio in the five
years since its preliminary approval in 2002?  I can't think of any. 
(Also, whatever happened to the 5.1 Surround Sound IBOC that you were so
excited about a year or two ago?)

And you can go back even further than that.  In 1995, the CRTC did an
evaluation of all the AM and FM IBOC systems that were in development at
the time.  All of the flaws they found in those systems are still valid
today with HD Radio.
